Diplomatic relations between the USSR and Jamaica were established on the 12th of March 1975. In January 1992, Jamaica recognized the Russian Federation as the successor state of the Soviet Union. Throughout all this time, Russia and Jamaica have been developing ties in the political, economic, humanitarian and other spheres. Traditionally friendly feelings of the peoples of Russia and Jamaica towards each other have always been contributing to the aspiration to widen and strengthen bilateral relations as well as intensify cooperation on the international arena.

Since 27th May 2016, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to Jamaica is His Excellency Vladimir Vinokurov.

Since December 2013, the non-resident Ambassador of Jamaica to the Russian Federation (with headquarters in Berlin, Germany) is Her Excellency Margaret Jobson.

On 28 September 2018, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs of the Commonwealth of Dominica Francine Baron signed the Agreement between the Government of the Russian Federation and the Government of the Commonwealth of Dominica on the waiver of visa requirements for mutual visits by citizens of the Russian Federation and citizens of the Commonwealth of Dominica The agreement shall enter into force on 14 January 2019. According to the Agreement citizens of the Russian Federation and citizens of the Commonwealth of Dominica holding valid passports, that serve as identification documents during their stay abroad, may enter, leave, pass in transit or stay in the territory of the other State without obtaining a visa for not more than 90 calendar days per each period of 180 days, starting from the date of the first. Citizens of either State who intend to stay or reside in the territory of the other State for a period exceeding 90 days, or to take up employment or to engage in business activities in its territory shall obtain a visa at a diplomatic mission or consular post of the State of the other Party in accordance with the legislation of the receiving State....

The Agreement between the Government of the Russian Federation and the Government of Jamaica on conditions of the waiver of visa requirements for mutual visits of the nationals of the Russian Federation and the nationals of Jamaica is entering into force today, November 27th, 2018. It was signed on September 27th, 2018, by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, His Excellency Sergei Lavrov and the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of Jamaica, the Honourable Kamina Johnson Smith, in the margins of the 73rd session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The Agreement allows Russian and Jamaican nationals up to 90 days visa-free visits for tourism, private, cultural exchange and business purposes....
