Diplomatic relations between the USSR and Jamaica were established on the 12th of March 1975. In January 1992, Jamaica recognized the Russian Federation as the successor state of the Soviet Union. Throughout all this time, Russia and Jamaica have been developing ties in the political, economic, humanitarian and other spheres. Traditionally friendly feelings of the peoples of Russia and Jamaica towards each other have always been contributing to the aspiration to widen and strengthen bilateral relations as well as intensify cooperation on the international arena.

Since 27th May 2016, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to Jamaica is His Excellency Vladimir Vinokurov.

Since December 2013, the non-resident Ambassador of Jamaica to the Russian Federation (with headquarters in Berlin, Germany) is Her Excellency Margaret Jobson.
